Fennel Tea

Fennel Tea

Another tea and, of course, more great health benefits!  Fennel tea is well known for its ability to promote a healthy appetite and good digestion. It is often used in Spain, India and Italy as an after dinner digestive aid. But did you know fennel tea is also used to help with the symptoms of whooping cough, asthma, bronchitis and other upper-respiratory illnesses?

This tea is naturally caffeine free and is also a natural breath freshener.  It has also been shown to have some anti-bacterial properties.

Fennel tea’s digestive benefits come from its ability to stimulate the production of gastric juices and relax muscles in the digestive system.  It is even safe enough for infants and children and is often recommended for treating the symptoms of colic.  It is shown to help the baby release gas and therefore relieve the tummy discomfort.

For indigestion problems, abdominal cramps, colic, upset stomach or bloating crushed fennel seeds are used by pouring one cup of boiling water over one to two teaspoons of the seeds, letting it stand for ten minutes then strain.  You can drink this three times a day to relieve symptoms.

You can also use fennel tea to reduce eye inflammations by mixing a half cup of water and two teaspoons of crushed fennel seeds, bringing mixture to a boil, let cool for about 10 minutes then soak a cotton ball in the mixture and place on the eye for fifteen to 20 minutes.

Some research indicates fennel may be helpful for kidney stones, symptoms of menopause, obesity and increasing the milk yield during breastfeeding.  In addition there is an old folk remedy that says you can relieve sore nipples or an infection by soaking a cloth in the warm tea and applying to the infected area up to three times a day.

There don’t appear to be any known side affects of consuming fennel tea and allergic reactions are rare.  The only allergic reaction reported is in those that show a reaction to celery.  You can even chew on a handful of seeds as a digestive aid instead of drinking the tea.  The seeds have a mild, pleasant tasting licorice-like flavor.

If you are experiencing digestive problems,  bloating or gas or if you are at your wit’s end dealing with a colicky baby you should give fennel tea a try.
