Green Tea Benefits

Green tea has gained immense popularity in the last few years. You will find green tea in everything from skin care products to diet pills. The Chinese have been using it for over 4,000 years and consider green tea benefits as treating everything from headaches to depression.

The main ingredient that gives green tea its remarkable health benefits is EGCG, a powerful antioxidant. It has been found through extensive studies that EGCG not only inhibits the growth of cancer cells but it can also destroy them without harming healthy cells.

Research by Purdue University has shown that a certain compound in green tea can stop cancer cells from growing. Another green tea benefit is its ability to lower cholesterol levels and improve the ratio of good cholesterol to bad.

Is Green Tea Better than other teas?

When compared to other Chinese teas like oolong and black, green tea benefits far outweight the benefits of other teas. This is primarily due to the way green tea is made. In black and oolong tea, the leaves are fermented. This causes the health benefits of EGCG to develop into a less medically beneficial form.

In green tea the leaves are steamed. It is this process that keeps the EGCG health benefits from oxidizing.

Another green tea benefit has shown to be its ability to destroy bacteria. Because of this it has shown to prevent both food poisoning and tooth decay.

Green Tea Benefits for Weight Loss

You see green tea diet pills, mega green diet pills, green tea drinks, all of which are supposed to make you lose weight. Is it true? Well, studies have shown that drinking green tea can cause you to burn more calories. An American Journal of Nutrition study found that men who took both green tea and caffeine burned more calories than those who only took caffeine or a placebo.

So now you know why green tea is often referred to as a “miracle in a cup.”
