Tea Effects on Your Health: Green Tea vs. Black Tea

You’re probably quite aware of the amazing tea effects of green tea, but what about black tea?  Is it as good for you?

Black tea comes from the leaves of “camellia sinensis” as does green tea.  One difference is that black tea is more oxidized than green, oolong or white.  Its more notable difference is its stronger flavor and it also has more caffeine than those varieties that are less oxidized.  While you can find distinctive flavors — sweet or spicy — are you losing out on the health benefits by drinking black tea?

Black tea’s fermentation process converts the EGCGs (the powerful antioxidants that green tea is famous for) into other compounds.  However, rather than making black tea inferior to green tea researchers have found that the other compounds, theaflavins and thearubigens, have health benefits similar to those of green tea.

There have been various research projects that have indicated that consuming black tea contributes to lowering the production of LDL (“bad cholesterol”) and seems to significantly lower the risk of stroke, especially in men.  Amazingly it was even shown that improvement in the functioning of the blood vessels was apparent in just two hours of consuming black tea.

There has also been a study done in Singapore that claims the regular use of black tea could help lower the likelihood of Parkinson’s disease.  The studies conducted by the Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine and National Neuroscience Institute in Singapore found that by drinking even as little as 3/4 cup of black tea every day the risk of developing Parkinson’s was reduced by nearly 71%.

One finding from this study indicated that since the flavonoids in black tea (similar to those in green tea) offer anti-inflammatory benefits on the heart and blood system that may result in improved circulation to the brain.

So, if you enjoy the beneficial tea effects on your health, now you can also enjoy adding variety.
