Tea Uses: Help for Diabetics?

With all the popularity of green tea and the overwhelming evidence of its health benefits, we may tend to overlook the benefits of some herbal teas.  While herbal teas have been best known for their soothing and calming qualities, a new study by the Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry (Sept. 10th issue) now claims that drinking chamomile tea daily may prevent the complications arising from diabetes.

Because type 2 diabetes is now considered to be at epidemic levels in the US and spreading worldwide these findings could lead to a chamomile-based drug to treat these problems which include vision loss and nerve and kidney damage.

Chamomile is also known as manzanilla and comes from the herb matricaria recutita.  It has a centuries-long reputation as a medicinal cure-all.  It has always been popular as a “bedtime” tea because of its soothing effects and medical research has shown that it can be safely used for a long period of time to nurture the nervous system, as well as other systems of the body.

It has also been shown to help people with intestinal discomfort.  It works as an anti-imflammatory and reduces gas.  The National Institutes of Health have recommended that people drink a cup of chamomile tea after meals.  It has also been found to benefit people suffering from stress, muscle spasms of any kind and menstrual cramps.

Researchers in England have found a wide range of health benefits for chamomile tea including boosting the immune system, fighting infections associated with colds, improving liver function, relieving back pain and relieving rheumatism.

Chamomile is currently one of the most popular herbal teas in the U.S.  It has a mild, fruity flavor and combined with its apparent health benefits you can confidently drink this tea daily.
